On Tuesday night March 15th the Washington Capitals beat the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime to secure a place in the upcoming playoffs. While team was winning dramatically on the ice, the Anacostia Waterfront Trust was winning, too, thanks to Caps players, fans, and the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation.
To celebrate Amtrak Go Green night, all 24 current roster players signed special green pregame warmup jerseys and pucks. The 48 items, plus an additional puck signed by coach Barry Trotz and a team puck set in a framed shadowbox, were offered to fans in an online auction.
Capitals fans responded to the auction with extraordinary enthusiasm. The single most popular item was former Hurricane Justin Williams’ jersey, which went for an unbelievable $4650, no doubt driven by the winger’s 2nd period go-ahead goal.
Proceeds from the Go Green auction will go to the MSE Foundation. A significant percentage will be granted to Trust programs, with $5000 set aside to support the work of our partner the Anacostia Watershed Society.
Sincere thanks to Capitals fans, players, and the MSE Foundation. Rock the Red!
